This is a tough one!! You and him seem close. Just ask if there could ever be anything between you two. If not there should be no reason to destroy a great friendship. It sounds like he has not made his mind up on what he wants at this time, and that is fine. The worst thing that could happen is to do something because you feel like you should, and not really be ready for it.
